Hey Parents!

Your kid's curiosity deserves more than a classroom

Watch your kid's budding curiosity blossom into a passion for physics, chemistry, biology, geology (and more!) as they work on projects that explore the mysteries of the universe.

We see it happen all the time on Primer

Seren's borax crystals

Seren found out how to grow her own crystals to answer the question: “What affects the shape and size of borax crystals?”

Sophia’s bird feeder

Sophia designed a bird-feeder from scratch in her own yard.

Jaxon’s solar oven

Jaxon built a solar oven and then tested it by making s’mores.

Audrey’s biosphere

Audrey created a biosphere to model how an ecosystem works.

How it works

Get started from home

Kids can join with a fully formed concept or just an idea. We’ll help take their project to the next level. They’ll get access to our project planner and live brainstorms with new friends all for free.

Encouragement from the community

Kids share a weekly project update with the community. They'll get feedback and support from peers and mentors.

Joining in

As part of the community, kids can vote on their favorite weekly updates from others and offer friendly advice or support.

The community has spoken

The best updates and feedback will score points and send kids up the leaderboard. Kids with the most points can win monthly cash prizes.

FAQ

What if my great idea hasn't come to me yet?

That’s fine! Ideas sometimes come later. But here are some resources and things to consider:

Start with a question

Think about what matters to you and what you love doing. Maybe it’s protecting the ocean or building robots. Then ask a question. Maybe something like:

“How can I build an electric motor?” or, “What is a possible solution to microplastics?”

Get Inspired

Check out sciencebuddies.org for project ideas or to help get your gears spinning.

  • Build an electric motor. Ever wanted to learn how electric cars work? You can build a motor that runs on the same principles with nothing more complicated than a battery, some magnets, and paper clips.
  • Make your own shampoo. How does shampoo actually work? Create your own shampoo and experiment with different recipes to find the most effective combination for your hair.
  • Train a deep learning model. Explore the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Teach a computer how to recognize objects by training an image classifier.
  • Recreate ocean currents. Determine how ocean currents are created by the mixing of water with different temperatures. Use common items in your kitchen to see how these might change along with the Earth’s climate.

What are the cash prizes?

There’s a total of $1,000 in the prize pool each month for the next 10 months, for a total of $10,000 in prizes. Each month the winners receive.

  • First place winner: $500
  • Second place winner: $300
  • Third place winner: $200

To qualify for the prizes, the participants must reach the top 10 in points on the leaderboard at some point during the month.

What is Primer?

Primer is the world’s first community built for ambitious kids to explore their interests together. We offer clubs for passionate kids on everything from writing to cooking to game design! Primer is a playground for experimentation and a collaborative workshop for passion projects.

What is the schedule and time commitment?

You can spend as much time as they need and want to work. We ask that kids try to join in with the Science Fair community at least once a week.

Is it really free?

It really really is. Your first Primer Club is free forever! If you would like to join other Clubs, you can purchase a membership for $10/month.

What are the safety features?

Safety is our top priority. We use state-of-the-art algorithms and old-fashioned manual reviews to keep inappropriate content off Primer. Please review our Community Guidelines for more details. Have more questions? Please email us: hi@withprimer.com.
